Yes taxes will eat up most of the discount. I don’t know about the brick and mortar store inventory, but the online store (store.apple.com) has had both models in stock for the last week or so, I think those come with free shipping so you should still get them for say $60 off, which will be much more of a discount than you will see from apple for the next few years.

Seems like that discount would barely cover taxes, how sad.

I also doubt you can just walk into a store and expect to find refurbs behind the counter readily available for sale.

FYI, there's a way to get your hands on an 4GB iPhone discount which bring is to $374. It turns out to be lower actual dollar cost than the employee discount, open to anyone and you don't need to know someone who works for Apple.
