We’re Losing Signal Captain! – iPhone Problems
June 23rd, 2010
Maybe it is better that the Canadian launch of the iPhone 4 has been delayed. It looks like early adopters in the United States are having signal problems with their devices. Instead of me explaining the problem to you, take a look at the video below.

They took so much care to separate the antennas with the black bar but they connect through the current in our hand.

Try placing both hands on the bottom half of the iPhone, covering it front and back. In a weak area you may see your signal drop after a few seconds. Removing your hands from this position should return the signal to the original strength, but in some cases it may take 20 seconds or so to stabilize.

July 16 – Apple has responded … and as usual, the issue is not really as serious as suggested by Apple’s detractors. Supposedly this is a problem experienced by all smartphones; video similar to the one shown for the iphone 4 is also available for the phones of other manufacturers. Apple also claims that the algorithm used overestimated the bars and thus the drop was more dramatic than actual. They have updated the software to correct the signal strength algorithm (whether we believe this or not).
As a resolution … Apple is now handing over free cases/bumpers to all owners and to all who get a phone until September 30. If a bumper was purchased, the cost is being refunded. If consumers are still unhappy, full refunds are being accepted on returns without any associated fees.
The real issue, however, as far as I’m concerned is whether calls are really dropped or if you just lose the bars. While you can set up a situation that replicates the problem (such as that suggested by Abel) – I for one will never hold my phone in this manner when trying to use it, so just what exactly is my concern supposed to be?
From the data they’ve shown on calls to Applecare (0.55% of all iphone 4 consumers), returns (1.7% versus > 6% for the 3GS), and dropped calls (<1 more call per 100 over the 3GS) this is not a big issue for users. They compared to the 3GS because it is still the highest selling smartphone of all time.
You can see the Apple response here:
I’ve given a complete summary of what the 30 minute video covers.
In the end, the real answer is clear: if you don’t like Apple, don’t buy from Apple. If you are not happy with your product, return it. If you want to trash the product, find a real flaw, not one you have to manufacture with unrealistic user conditions. If the only problem with the iphone 4 that has revealed itself in the first 3 weeks of its release is the antenna, I think it is likely a high quality device.

I really enjoyed this post. We (as a community), appreciate it. I have a comparable blog on this subject. Do you mind if I link to this post on my internet site?
