It appears parent company, Bell Mobility Inc., has decided to bring out the defibrillator and zap Solo Mobile back to life. The discount carrier has basically been kept out of the spot light since Bell assumed full control over Virgin Mobile Canada.

Today the LG 230 appeared on the Solo Mobile website reviving the all but dead company for a few more months. The LG 230 is a basic flip phone that will set you back an even $100 if purchase outright or an affordable $25 on a 2 year term.

It has been awhile since we last posted something about Solo Mobile, a division of Bell Mobility, so lets give them some press time.

A web page went up late last week with information about three unlimited plans. Of course a truly “unlimited”plan it too good to be true so the following conditions apply:

1) available in Toronto and Montreal only
2) only for use in “City Zone” (just like the “Solo in the City” and “City Fido” plans)
3) prepaid only

The three plans have since been removed from the Solo Mobile website, but they should be back soon. The plans are most likely in direct competition with newcomer Public Mobile. The new carrier is currently advertising a $40/month unlimited talk and text plan which will become available when they launch in Toronto and Montreal later this year.

Samsung Link Unites the Bell Family

Solo Mobile is the last carrier in the Bell Family (Bell, Virgin, Solo) to launch the Samsung Link.

Just like Bell and Virgin, Solo’s Link will also features a full QWERTY keyboard, 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth, and a built-in MP3 player.

Best Buy Supports Earth Day

With Earth Day next week, April 22, all the major retailers are getting involved in one way or another.

Bring in your old cellphone to Best Buy next week and get $25 off the purchase of a new phone. If you are buying a phone priced at $0 you will receive a $25 store credit for accessories. The $25 accessory credit must be used at the time of purchase and no cash will be given back if the accessory is less than $25.

The trade-in program is only available for new contracts, contract renewals, and upgrades. Thus prepaid phones are not eligible. Trade-in incentives are only valid from April 17, 2009 – April 23, 2009 and must be done in-store.

BlackBerry Outage

Looks like most BlackBerry users in Canada and the United States are currently without e-mail service. From what I have read it appears all service providers are affected by this outage: Rogers, AT&T, Verizon, etc.
